The Viking Farm is our family’s working Viking Age homestead, rooted in tradition and a deep respect for the land. Set across 155 picturesque acres in Western Wisconsin, our organically operated, regenerative farm brings the past to life through historic architecture, animals, and age-old practices. Visitors can step into a simpler time while enjoying farm goods including fiber, food, livestock, and fresh baked goods available to purchase or order.

Fresh Organic Quail Eggs

Quail eggs are a nutrient-rich delicacy, high in vitamin D and prized in many cultures for both culinary and traditional medicinal uses. Available in limited quantities on a first-come, first-served basis when the Viking Store or Farm Stand is open.

Fresh Organic Duck Eggs

Duck eggs are rich in flavor with a higher fat content, making them especially prized for baking. Available in limited quantities on a first-come, first-served basis when the Viking Store or Farm Stand is open.

Livestock

Icelandic Sheep

Icelandic Sheep are one of the oldest and most distinctive breeds of Northern European sheep, brought to Iceland by Norse settlers more than a thousand years ago. They are hardy, intelligent, and remarkably well suited to life outdoors, producing a naturally varied fleece that can contain both fine underwool and longer outer fibers. Their connection to the old Nordic farmstead makes them a particularly fitting breed for Clan Rúnda, where usefulness, self-sufficiency, and traditional crafts are all part of the same story.

Our flock provides several of the things a small farmstead once depended upon from a single animal: meat, wool, and milk. We use their wool for traditional fiber crafts and offer animals from our breeding program to others who would like to raise this remarkable heritage breed themselves. Rather than treating the sheep simply as livestock, we see them as part of the living landscape of the farm—and an opportunity to keep old breeds and useful skills alive for another generation.

Gotland Sheep

Gotland Sheep are a Swedish heritage breed known for their beautiful naturally gray wool, distinctive curly locks, and exceptional versatility. Developed on the island of Gotland, they have long been valued for both their useful fleece and their meat. Their striking appearance and connection to the Scandinavian countryside make them a natural fit for a farmstead inspired by the northern lands and traditions of the Viking Age.

At Clan Rúnda, our Gotland Sheep are raised for meat, wool, and milk, while our breeding program also makes animals available to others interested in the breed. Their lustrous fleece is particularly well suited to handcrafting, while their hardiness and productive nature make them valuable farm animals beyond their appearance. For us, keeping Gotlands is another way of bringing heritage breeds back into everyday use rather than allowing them to become merely something remembered in history.

Silver Appleyard Ducks

Silver Appleyards are a handsome English heritage breed developed in the early twentieth century by Reginald Appleyard. They are large, productive ducks valued for both excellent meat and generous egg production. Their calm nature, striking plumage, and usefulness make them an especially good fit for a diversified farmstead where one animal can serve several purposes.

Our Silver Appleyards are raised for meat and eggs, and we also make birds available to others who would like to keep this versatile breed. We appreciate them not only for what they produce, but for the character they bring to the farm. Ducks are wonderfully suited to a working homestead, turning forage, insects, and other natural resources into food while adding plenty of personality to the landscape.

Icelandic Chickens

Icelandic Chickens are a rare landrace breed developed over centuries in the isolated farmsteads of Iceland. Rather than being shaped primarily through modern selective breeding, they retain much of the natural variety that developed among small flocks kept by Icelandic families. They are hardy, active, excellent foragers, and wonderfully varied in appearance, with no two birds necessarily looking quite alike.

We keep Icelandic Chickens for meat and eggs and maintain a breeding flock so that birds can be made available to others who want to raise this remarkable heritage breed. Their independence and ability to make good use of the landscape suit the kind of farmstead we are building here at Clan Rúnda. They remind us that useful livestock does not have to be highly standardized—and that sometimes preserving a living tradition means allowing some of its natural character to remain.

Galloway Cows

Galloway cattle are a hardy heritage breed originating in southwestern Scotland, where they developed in a rugged climate and learned to thrive with relatively little pampering. Their thick, insulating coats, efficient grazing habits, and calm nature make them exceptionally well suited to life on pasture. Galloways have been valued for generations as practical cattle capable of producing excellent beef while making good use of the land beneath their feet.

Our Galloways are raised for premium beef, with an emphasis on pasture-based, responsible farming. We are building our herd gradually, giving the cattle room to graze and allowing the farm itself to provide much of what they need throughout the year. We believe good beef begins with healthy animals, healthy soil, and a slower approach to raising livestock—and we hope our herd will eventually provide families with beef they can feel good about bringing to their table.

Coturnix Quail

Coturnix Quail are small, remarkably productive birds that have been kept by people for centuries as a dependable source of meat and eggs. They mature quickly, require little space compared with larger livestock, and are well suited to small-scale farming. Their quiet nature and efficient use of feed make them an excellent example of the practical animals that have traditionally helped make a farmstead more self-sufficient.

At Clan Rúnda, we raise Coturnix Quail for both meat and eggs, while also offering birds for those who want to raise their own. Although they are small, quail can provide a surprising amount of food from a modest amount of space. We enjoy keeping them as part of a diverse farm where different animals each have their own place and purpose, and where traditional forms of self-reliance remain practical in the modern world.

d'Argent Rabbits

The d'Argent is a beautiful heritage rabbit known for its distinctive silvered coat, which develops as the animal matures. Originally developed in France, these rabbits have traditionally been valued as both meat animals and show animals. Their attractive appearance, manageable size, and practical nature make them well suited to a small farmstead where animals are expected to be useful as well as beautiful.

We raise d'Argent Rabbits for both meat and as pets, with breeding animals available to those who would like to begin or expand their own rabbitry. Raising rabbits is a wonderful example of how a small animal can provide meaningful food and companionship while requiring relatively little space. For us, they are part of the larger farmstead tradition of keeping animals that can serve a genuine purpose while being treated with care and respect.
